Mantra to Protect Your Energy

As a Reiki practitioner I have my own way of asking for protection before starting a session. The need for energetic protection came up during a session with a client. Do you have a short invocation or prayer I can share with my client? She's looking for something concrete that she can read and use for protection in her daily life. Thank you so much.

Thanks for this great question. The best forms of energetic protection are personal and individual. This is because our need or desire for protection is personal, just like what helps us to feel protected is personal and individual. Some feel a need for protection and others don't, whether we're Reiki practitioners or clients. And different approaches resonate with different people. So when I have clients or students looking for a tool to use, I encourage them to find what aligns with and feels right to them.

When it comes to a protection prayer or mantra, I encourage the client to create their own saying or prayer based on what resonates with them. For instance, anytime I feel the need for protection, I call on Archangel Michael. He is always available to all of us, but depending on an individual's belief system, they may prefer something or someone else — like Durga, the Hindu goddess of protection, for instance.

Sure, I can give you a protection mantra, like "Michael, please be with me and protect me." or "I shield myself in blue protective light" or "Om Dum Durgayei Namaha." But these might not have any personal meaning to you.

At the heart of feeling protected is feeling in control and empowered. The best way to feel empowered is when we create our own mantras or power phrases rather than having someone give them to us. This only further gives away our power at a time when it's essential to reclaim our power.

When I've had clients bring this up to me, I've walked them through determining what protection feels like to them, to consider how they feel protected, and ask themselves what helps them to feel protected. These kinds of questions help them reflect on their own answers to create their own oersonal protection ritual or mantra.

You can ask questions like...
1. What does protection feel like to you?
2. How do you feel protected?
3. When do you feel protected?
4. What does feeling protected look or feel like to you?
5. What helps you feel protected?

It can also be helpful to encourage the client to remember a specific experience with questions like, "What is one time when you felt protected? Can you visualize or sense that moment, how you felt, what was happening, and what helped you feel protected?" Bringing the client back to a moment when they felt safe and protected helps them to get clarity about their own sense of power and to draw on that experience in the future when they feel unsafe or unprotected.

When I explored these questions with one client, she recalled a time when she felt protected as a child when she would put a protective "wall" between her and her teasing sibling with the the phrase "The wall is up." It was an invisible wall, of course, but she felt empowered and protected by it. The client determined to use the phrase "The wall is up." anytime she felt the need for protection.

I should note that this client's need for protection was outside of our sessions because the client wasn't feeling unprotected during sessions, but rather just being out and about in the world. Because even if we don't feel the need for protection during a Reiki session, we might sometimes feel the need for protection as humans moving about in a complex and sometimes scary world.
